Making Sense: creating software that makes sense

Minor updates for showtimes

There was one feature on Showtimes.my that many didn’t notice or understood. We had this arrow on the top right corner of each movie. Clicking on it will move the movie to the top of the page. The idea is to ’sticky’ the movie so you can compare between movies you are interested in easily. We felt the feature was useful but wasn’t implemented correctly, so we did some changes.

  1. The arrows are now pins. This gives user a cue on what exactly it does.
  2. Pinned movies have a different color pin. A visual cue that the movie is pinned.
  3. Notifications when you click on the pin. Since the movie is moved to the top, a notification is shown to let user know what happened.
  4. Ability to unpin a movie.
  5. Remember the order of movies pinned between page reloads. This was especially important when you are changing dates or cities.

We hope you like this ‘revamped’ pinning feature and do give us some feedback in the comments.

Showtimes done right

Finally, after 2-3 weeks working on this during our free time, we present you Showtimes.my. This is our take on improving the experience of browsing for showtimes online.

Showtimes.my

Here are some of the little touches we added.

  1. Showtimes highlighting. We grey out those time that’s in the past and focus your attention on upcoming showtimes.
  2. Filtering cinemas is purely using Javascript so there’s no load time.
  3. RottenTomatoes freshness ratings. (Note: only on movies that are listed on RT)
  4. Large poster image because its pretty

Currently, we are getting showtimes from a few sources and it seems sometimes they can be wrong. Still have yet to figure out a solution. We wish every cinema have some sort of showtime feed. Tell us what you think/report bugs about the site in the comments.

It’s been a while…

A little more than 2 years ago we launched Ravejoint. Our take on the food and restaurant review experience.  We went on and build a few sites for our clients and now we are back to this sense making business. There’s something that we would like to ‘fix’ and improve the user experience on. Stay tuned as we update on our progress here.
